At Play on the Reef

At Play On The Reef
by Philip Scott Wikel (Waikoloa)

A south swell strums softly
across the reef
it’s summer in winter
if only in brief

the coral is tickled
and surfing kids rise
anticipating the rush and
the thrill of a ride

They stand on the tide
the white curling mist
with whistling spindrift
a swirl and a hiss

They giggle and wriggle
and manage the glide
become one with the ocean
and feed their insides

For a child it’s pure
no hinderance of vision
they feel everything at once
and know only their mission

to ride salty waves
to smile and cheer
today is the best day
“the swell is here”

Puka Hunting

Puka Hunting

by Philip Scott August

screen-shot-2017-01-13-at-10-44-03-am

We comb the beach for pukas

we are fishers of shells bound

by love’s umbilical

as we sift, scratch, and dig for treasure

I go to one end

and she the other

meeting in the middle

we find ourselves children again

and blend as friends and lovers

we make a competition of it

and I declare the lead

yet very quickly the duel is lost

to awe, and the exaltation of discovery

she, me, we, sand, sun and surf

the light of the eternal tryst

a fusion in time unbridled

I’ve become one with the machine…

maui music_openingFinishing up production on the Aloha Maui “Mixed Plate” Music Video Fest and I think I’ve become one with the machine. For better or for worse I am a laptop with magical software. We’ve spent the past 7 days conspiring to create what we hope will be “the” event or at least “an” event of your year. We’re both tired and overheated but we think we might have created something cool, something fun, and something edifying. All this in one video you ask? Well, she’s one hour and fifteen minutes long. Chances are there might be something worthwhile somewhere in there. We’ll be giving away the first 50 copies. So watch out, a couple of strangers might just force a free DVD on you.

Our Story: Behind The Aloha Project

keepOur Story:

Peggy and I are not “connected” people, we’re not “influential” people and we’re not people who wish to be either. What we are connected to is spirit and a handful of friends and family who live as modestly as we do.

Another thing Peggy and I are are two people with a lot of hopes and dreams for the way things could be, the way things might be and the way things should be. We wish for simple changes like an increase in the Spirit of Aloha and a deeper love for the people from which it was born, a greater respect for the ocean and the land, and an increase in compassion for the mentally ill.

This is essentially what the Aloha Project is about. Peggy and I have solid and lofty goals, the talents to make them happen, and everything except the necessary funding to put them into action. Neither of us are eligible for bank loans or large credit card limits, and that is why we came to you with our dream. Some dreams require that others share them.

We know from your response to Mauisalt Magazine and our Aloha Maui “Mixed Plate” Video Fest that many of you are as excited and hopeful that these things will become a long-term part of all of our lives. And these two things have the power to eventually build the foundation of a sanctuary for the mentally ill and sufferers of PTSD who are not and cannot receive the type of care they need.

So, at any rate, we have only 10 days before our Indiegogo Campaign comes to a close. We hope you’ll consider, or even reconsider being a part of our vision. It’s a give and receive proposition. You get a piece of the campaign through the gifts we’re offering, and we get to move forward and upward on a mission that we believe is for the betterment of all of us.

Ryo Utasato – Taking Us from One Part of the Globe to Another…

morgan_1293652923Ryo Utasato aka Ryo Utasato -Pike is a Japanese composer and singer/songwriter with a rich body of work that runs the gamut from electronica to ambient to world to rock and beyond. Being raised by parents who were both musicians themselves, Ryo has had no shortage of inspiration and has been creating music from a very young age. Her range of talent and unique experimental style is immediately striking and listening to one of her pieces will undoubtedly transport you to another place. Her soundtracks have appeared in a variety of film and TV, and she’s worked in such genres as sci-fi, drama, horror and action. Her work was also chosen for the theme of World Heritage series.

Ryo’s incredible musical sense combined with her genuine interest in world culture has opened her mind and pushed her to experiment with different types of sounds and instruments. Her music often features a mixture of seemingly contrasting sounds which collide at different points and produce unexpectedly moving results. On top of some of the more conventional instruments which Ryo has used in her music, she has also experimented with a number of others from different parts of the world such as the duduk (Armenia), the erhu (China) and the shamisen (Japan). The expanse and tremendous scale of her music is capable of taking us from one part of the globe to another, just by closing our eyes.
